How Often Should You Practise Yoga? An Honest Answer
By Nitu Patil

Ask the internet how often to practise yoga and you'll get two useless answers: "every day!" (unrealistic) and "whatever feels right!" (unhelpful). After six years of teaching, here's what I actually see work.
The honest minimum: twice a week
Two quality sessions a week is where visible change starts — measurably better flexibility in about 6–8 weeks, noticeably less stiffness within 2–3. One session a week feels nice but mostly maintains where you are. If you can only manage one, keep it — but pair it with the ten-minute home habit below.
The sweet spot: three to four times a week
This is where students transform. Strength poses that felt impossible in month one become warm-up material by month four. The key: these don't all need to be full classes.
A realistic week looks like:
- 2 guided sessions (in studio or live online) — where you learn and get corrected
- 1–2 short home practices — 15–20 minutes repeating what you learned
Why daily practice usually backfires
Committing to daily practice sets you up for a familiar loop: three perfect weeks, one missed day, guilt, and quitting entirely. Consistency over months beats intensity over weeks — every time. Your muscles also genuinely benefit from rest days, especially when you're building strength in aerial work.
The ten-minute rule
The most successful students I teach all do a version of this: on days you can't practise properly, do ten minutes. A few cat-cows, one down dog, one stretch you love. It keeps the habit alive, and habits — not heroics — are what change your body.
So, what should you do?
- Complete beginner: one class + one 10-minute home session per week for the first month. Build from there.
- Getting serious: two classes + one home practice.
- Chasing a goal (first inversion, touching your toes, managing back pain): three to four sessions, mixed formats.
